Anime Scope

The game I'm currently playing illustrates why some anime has trouble reining in it's scope and thus turning their stories into mush. I paraphrase the following somewhat:
Mystery Voice: What do you want?
Lead Character: I want to know who you are.
Mystery Voice: I am The Will of the Universe
Me: Hmm, I wonder if that's a full time job or if he has to deliver pizzas at night...

My thought: does that come with dental?

My follow up thought was of the Great Will of the Macrocosm from the Excel Saga anime series which spent a fair amount of the series involved in an affair with the ghost of an illegal immigrant (long story). In hindsight Excel may have been making fun of the whole concept since it's a common plot device in anime (saving a town isn't enough, you have to save the whole friggin universe!).
